Raspberries

My raspberry patch is about 4 years old.  I dug about 6 plants from my husband's grandma's patch. Now they take over about 600 square feet of garden space and are worth every inch!  We are all eating them fresh and forefoot I will find time to make jam this week...

First baby zucchinis!

Fresh zucchini soon!  I have 4 plants this year, they should give us plenty of zucchinis. I like to saute them with onions on high heat until they are a little burnt and caramelized on each side.  Mmm!  And of course zucchini bread made with lots of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg.  Another family favorite is chocolate zucchini cake.  Give us a few weeks and everyone will groan when I serve zucchini with dinner. I will eat it all summer because I don't have to go to the store and buy it!

Roses of love...

I have many different roses in my garden and yard.  I am not one of those who keeps them cut back to perfect little bushes, instead I let them take over fences and grow free.   In return they give an awesome show of thousands of roses this time of year!

Many of them were planted 8 years ago.  In the spring of 2004, our family lost 16 people for various reasons- family, friends, young, old, cancer, heart attack, car accident, alcoholism...  Going to funerals and memorials became a little too much for us after the first several.  I also gave birth to my third son that spring and was unable to travel to some services.  So I started planting roses in memory of those we lost instead.

Each spring they put on quite a show.  And each spring I take time to enjoy their beauty and remember why they are there.  I think about another year gone by and feel thankful that my family is still here, thriving.  I think about what each of those people meant to me and how they impacted my life.  I would not be the same person without knowing each of them.  Eight years later, it is still a grieving process.  And life goes on with roses of love.

Asparagus!

Our asparagus has been giving us more of a bounty than our family can eat for several years now. I started my asparagus from seed 13 years ago and planted them in their current location 11 years ago.  I think we have been harvesting and eating our asparagus for about 5 years now.  It had been neglected this year and is thoroughly overgrown with weeds, yet we have harvested close to 15lbs already and there is plenty more to come!  If you like asparagus and can dedicate long term garden space, it is sooooo worth it!
